There are
usually several volunteers at Monkton at any one
time, working in exchange for lodging, food,
learning and a taste of community life.
Most volunteers come for a week at a time, from
Monday through Sunday. (Overseas visitors may
stay for two weeks in the first instance.) The
work includes assisting us with gardening, farm
work, cooking, cleaning and maintaining the
grounds and buildings. We encourage volunteers to
share skills and also to expand their experience
with work in every area. Volunteers work roughly
35 hours during the week, normally from Tuesday
to Saturday with Monday and Sunday off.
In some cases volunteers come for a longer time
(up to three months), usually to lend special
skills to specific projects on site. We also host
paid or sponsored interns for research projects
related to sustainable development, offering
project support and research library access, as
well as intensive English tuition where
applicable.
While course activities are open to paying
participants only, volunteers often find
opportunities to join in a range of activities
such as singing, crafts, dancing and local walks.
We do not have childcare facilities on site.
While we may on occasion be able to offer
volunteer places for adults with children, this
is not available during family week holidays and
we do ask for a monetary contribution toward room
and board in these cases. We regret that we
cannot accommodate volunteers with pets.
The first step to becoming a volunteer is to fill
out and submit an application
form. We will
then contact you and organise the dates for
your visit. If you would like more
information, please phone or
email your questions to
us.
We look forward to hearing from you
soon.
