Welcome to Monkton Wyld Court.

An education centre run by a residential staff, we aim to provide an exemplar of intelligent adaptation to the world’s environmental, social and economic changes, a place where a diverse range of people can come to learn and share practical skills in sustainable living as well as benefit from creative expression and personal development.

For seventy years, the Grade II listed neo-Gothic buildings and eleven acres of lawns, gardens and meadows of Monkton Wyld Court have been dedicated to the education and edification of guests, visitors and residents alike.

Designed by
Richard Cromwell Carpenter, the rectory was built in 1848. In 1940 Carl and Eleanor Urban established a coeducational boarding school here to promote cooperative living and learning. While the original Monkton Wyld School closed in 1982, the importance of farming and other practical skills and a focus on what’s now called sustainability have remained central to our ethos.

As an Education Centre for Sustainable Living, Monkton Wyld Court hosts a range of courses, conferences and gatherings for adults, families and children. A Parent Child Group, Home Educators Group, crafts shop and a calendar of events add to this unique resource for the local community.

From bee-keeping to scything to yoga, Monkton's
programme promotes low-impact, earth-centred skills for changing modern life. Family weeks with themes like folk music and self sufficiency prove especially popular. We also host venue bookings and educational visits from the local area and further afield.

Meals are lovingly prepared in the house kitchen using fresh organic ingredients from the Court’s own Victorian walled garden, orchards and farm and from other local producers.

The Court is managed by a resident volunteer staff with the help of enthusiastic
volunteers and overseen by a board of trustees. We work to develop and promote a lifestyle based on mutual respect for each other and for the wider community and environment, and are committed to learning about sustainable, responsible life choices and striving to adopt them in our daily lives. Decisions are made by consensus, and new members are brought in through a gradual process that begins with an initial volunteering visit.
